Moseley & Balsall Heath Institute - history

The building was designed in the Victorian gothic style by the local architect William Hale and was built by the local builder John Bowen in 1879.

This was the home of a self-help organisation to improve the educational lot of poorer Victorians determined to better themselves.

The institute was able to attract luminaries such as Charles Dickens and Oscar Wilde to lecture there.

A sculpture over the entrance represents Industry and Art depicting a blacksmith, metalworker and spinner flanked by the busts of Michelangelo and Shakespeare.

The tympana of the ground-floor windows show medieval figures engaged in art, drama, literature, music, poetry, science.

Moseley Dance Centre and Hazelle Stage School - details

The building is host to Hazelle Stage School and First Act Workshops.

They run a variety of events which they manage including a 70's, 80's and 90's event which harken back to their roots.

Hazelle Stage School - takes pupils from the age of 3 years to teach them the IDTA theatre syllabus which includes Ballet, Tap, Acrobatics and Modern.

First Act Workshops - a drama training and casting centre for young actors in Birmingham and the West Midlands. They make short films, put on shows and get their members cast in major TV, film and theatre productions.

Shiamak - A Bollywood company with international links.
